The questions asked in GATE exam either memory type,  conceptual or numerical. The concept based on which paper is set depends on the GATE Syallbus. And it remains same for most of the time.

However the GATE pattern has changed several time.

From 1987 - 2002:  It was based on conventional questions

From 2003 - 2013:  Questions were  MCQ.

2014 onwards:  Their were two different types of questions asked in this pattern.  One was MCQ type and other was numerical answers without options this type of questions didn't have negative marking.

GATE pattern in 2020 can be found in GATE 2020 brochure.
