To understand all the different aspects of our environment, we need to understand biology, chemistry, physics, geography, resources management, economics and population issues. Thus, the scope of environmental studies is extremely wide and covers some aspects of nearly every major discipline. A number of career opportunities have emerged in these fields that are broadly classified as:
1. Environmental Managers:An environmental Manager is responsible for supervising the environmental performance of private, public and voluntary sector organizations. They develop, implement and monitor environmental strategies, policies and programmes that promote sustainable development. Environmental managers examine corporate activities to establish where improvements can be made and ensure compliance with environmental legislation across the organization.
2. Environmental lawyers:Environmental lawyers deal with legal problems that relate to the environment. Environmental lawyers do not merely act as 'transactional lawyers' to make environmental policy deals happen. Rather, they are primarily concerned with identifying and addressing the range of complicated legal issues that arise in relation to environmental issues, whether these concern pollution, climate change, water quality, biodiversity, urban planning, use of chemicals, waste, sustainable development, or GMOs(Genetically Modified Organisms).
3. Environmental Consultants:An environmental consultant is usually employed to identify and manage environmental risks in conjunction with associated regulatory standards established by local, regional or federal governments. The context could range from soil, water or air quality to species habitat protection. The specialized knowledge of an environmental consultant includes a unique combination of applied science or engineering, industry or commercial experience and government regulatory insight.
4. Environmental marketing:It is defined as the marketing of products that are recognised to be environmentally safe. Thus, these products are eco-friendly and don't harm the environment. The person employed for this task must hold a degree in environment and have sufficient knowledge about the cultivation practices for their growth. Environmental marketing/green marketing started in the 1980s, with the execution of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports which present an indication of company's environmental, social, and financial impacts.
5. Environmental economics:In the present day scenario Economics is considered a subject that can't subsist in isolation that involves only the study of how goods and services are created. Now, it has to take into consideration the efforts of the exploitation of various resources on the environment. The impacts may be in the form of damage, depletion, pollution or exhaustion, etc. This field thus needs experts from the area of economics working for the environmental impacts of various developmental projects.
6. Environmental engineers:Environmental engineers work for environment consultancies, engineering corporation, government organizations and environmental agencies. Environmental engineers mainly work for disposal and management of waste products; reclamation of degraded lands, from urban sprawl, industrial activities and construction projects; and control and mitigation of pollutants or effluents which results in undesirable effect on the natural environment. Moreover they are involved in making EIA for industrial projects to obtain environmental clearances. All in all, Environmental engineers work to make our environment better.
