The eligibility criteria for tnea is as follows

  • Candidates who are Tamil Nadu natives but have passed any of the VIII, IX, X, XI and XII standard or their equivalent examination from schools situated outside Tamil Nadu can also apply. They will have to enclose a copy of their nativity certificate only in electronic form/ digitally signed e-Certificate.
  • Candidates whose parents are central government employees are also eligible to apply for admission, irrespective of their nativity, provided if their parents or guardians (only if both parents are not alive) have been serving in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past 5 years at the time of application submission. The same has to be supported by enclosing a certificate from the employer of the parent or guardian, to that effect.

  • Candidates whose parents are employees in public sector or government recognised institutions at the time of application submission in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years can also apply for admission, irrespective of their domicile. In this case, a certificate from the employer has to be enclosed along with the application form stating that the person is a permanent employee of the form or institution along with evidence like income tax return, PF slips etc and is working in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past 5 years.

  • Candidates whose parents are employees of All India service Tamil Nadu cadre officers are also eligible to apply.

  • Candidates from outside Tamil Nadu are also eligible to apply for TNEA, provided they have studied VIII, IX, X, XI and XII standard in Tamil Nadu. They do not have to disclose their nativity certificate.

  • Candidates who have studied in Tamil Nadu and are Srilankan Tamil refugee can apply for admission and they will be considered under open competition. They will have to produce their identification certificate from the Head Quarters Tahsildar. For all those who have not registered in the refugee camp will have to submit a copy of their passport, visa and letter registered with police station.

Note that TNEA counselling is open for everybody. The cutoff is calculated by:

Cutoff = (Maths/2) + ( Physics + Chemistry) /4
