Dear Aspirant,
Once you give the JEE main/advanced then after the result the rank list will come out and then the process of COUNSELLING will start. It is a process of filling the seats according to the rank you got and the preference you have. The whole process is conducted by JoSAA and contains 7 rounds as I have explained below.
let us understand this by an example, suppose there are three college, In Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.
1. Mumbai College.
2. Delhi College.
3. Kolkata College. and you choose them in this preference. Each of the other students has also fill in the same order.
let us assume there are 100 seats in each of these college and there are total 300 seats and 300 students. Now according to the counselling all of the students want the Mumbai college first, and then Delhi and then Kolkata. then theoretically, the first 100 will get mumbai, and so on for Delhi and Kolkata. In this case if your rank is anywhere between 1-100 you can join mumbai college.
Now the actual counselling is same thing with around 40000 seats and 12 lakh candidates and some reservation is also there.
Hope this helps you understand counselling and answers your question on how you'll be able to get a college. All the colleges have this thing called opening and closing rank which is 1-100 for this hypothetical case here. You must check out the cutoff of the college you are interested in and you'll get the idea.
Thank you.
