How much time before should I start preparing for CAT exam ? I am right now in SE of Engineering.

You can start preparing for CAT now also. It will only benefit you. However, the ideal time to start the preparation is 7-8 months before you appear for CAT Exam.
You should try to increase you question solving speed, accuracy, practice mock papers and focus on weak areas one month before taking CAT Exam. Keep doing hard work, and with 7-8 months of preparation you can easily get into top B-Schools of India.

Ideally, CAT preparation takes around 300 hours to 500 hours of serious preparation. While there is no right time to start preparing for the CAT Exam, it is recommended that a CAT aspirant should start the preparation sometime between Jan-Feb and June-July of the year he or she is planning to appear for CAT. So i think wait till your 3rd year
