Admissions in private colleges are usually done through state counseling for the private colleges of that particular state. Some private colleges dont take part in such counselings so for them you might need to apply separately. you can apply for state counseling in your state and other states as well but in other states you will get preferance only if the domicile quota has some vacant seats at the end of the counseing. hope this helps and goodluck:)
