I got 42,000 rank in SC category Jee mains and my home state is Karnataka and my 12th percentage is 89.33 . Should I drop a year to try for good rank or go for some counselling ?

According to the rank and percentile you mentioned it's difficult to get a seat in NITs or IIITs. You may apply for state level councelling. I advise you to start preparation for next year and also take part in councelling, if you get a satisfactory college then go for BTech otherwise continue your preparation.
