Hello,
I am extremely sorry to tell you, with 40k rank in Jee mains and considering no reservation quota, your chances of getting mechanical in any NITs in mainland India is very low. Even in north-eastern NITs, older ones like NIT Agartala and Silchar closes around 37000 rank. Only other NIT where you can get Mech with this rank is NIT Srinagar which closed in 51k rank. I am attaching the article for cutoffs of different NITs in Mechanical Engg. https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/nits-cutoff-for-btech-mechanical-engineering.
The same case stands valid with Civil Engineering also, all the NITs in mainland closes in and around 35k rank at maximum. https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/nits-cutoff-for-btech-civil-engineering. Your best chance is NIT Agartala and NIT Srinagar considering other state quota. I am suggesting NIT Agartala because unlike other New NITs of north-east, its a fairly old college(estd. in 1958) and is NIT since 2006, which makes it better in every sense.
Thanks.
