GATE is a national level entrance examfor all the students wishing to pursue M.Tech and also a number of Public Sector Units recruit candidates on the basis of their GATE scores. Till now GATE exam is not compulsory for the engineering students. But as per some reports, it will be made compulsory from next academic year. Students who are pursuing technical courses might have to write a mandatory Exit Exam and will have to clear it to get their degree.

Hi there!hope you are doing well.
No, at present it is not compulsory for mechanical engineering student to qualify gate exam . however for a good future in mechanical engineering you must have correct gate with colourful marks. After cracking gate you will have option of several PSU and good iit  for MTech. Hope this will help you. good luck.
