Dear friends ,

Yes there is a difference between the marks and percentile

MARKS- it is the number or value you obtained in particular subject.

PERCENTILE- it express all the observation of a given occurrence, below a certain percentage of that occurrence.  Ex- suppose in group of 20 you score the  fourth highest marks so you did better than 80 percent in your group it means your percentile is 80th

If you score 60 out of 100 . So 60 is the 80th percentile in that group

Hi aspirant

Definitely there is huge difference between percentile and marks .

Marks is something what you get when you answer a question paper .how many correct answer and how many wrong answer together sum to your aggregate marks .

Percentile is a kind of relative meter.Like how many students have appeared in the exams and how much they are scoring .Based on that percentile is calculated .If you get 95%ile it means 95 % of students who have appeared are scoring less than you but 5% students have scored more marks than you.

You can refer the link to see how jee mains percentile is calculated.

Hello lalitha

It is very intresting question . Most the people get confused between these. Marks are normally related to our performance in exam.

They directly relate on our percentage.

When we come to the percentile it depends on the overall performance of all the candidates. Now when we say that percentile it is realtive grading based on the ranks . The top scorer will get 100 percentile then the next one gets the next percentile.

If you want your rank approx then we can subtreact your percentile from 100 and multiply by the number of people who attempted the exam .

Then divide by 100 you get the nearest rank .

Hope my answer helps you.

All the best.

Dear aspirant,

Yes there is a difference Marks indicate how much you have scored out of total marks and Percentile means if the entire range of students is divided into 100 groups, which group do you belong to.If your result says you have got 90 percent, then it means 90% of the total marks. So 270 out of 300.

But if the result says 90 percentile, then that doesn't mean your score is 270. It means your score is better than 90% of the applicants. You may have scored 150, but 90% of the applicants are below that score.

Hope it helps.
