In general , as far as faculty, reputation , infrastructure , facilities , research opportunities etc are concerned , it is a good institute . Apart from this it is you who need to analyse your needs and expectation about the the college you want to study and see whether JMU fulfills it. As far as education is concerned it is a good option. Now regarding the course whether it is good or bad for you ,is completely based on your interest ,skills and passion towards the subject and you career goals and plan. There is nothing wrong with applied mathematics if you have a deep interest and patience to learn it. Scope wise you will have many options like MSc , MBA,MCA etc which you can choose according to your career expectations .One rewarding and interesting combination with applied math would be computer science, so if you are interested , you may explore the area and start preparing from now for bright career.  Math is a universal subject hence you will not be misfit in any area , you will have a lot of career opportunities if you work hard.
