API Gravity means American Petroleum Institute Gravity. It is a measure of how heavy or light is the fluid (petrol) as compared to the water. It has the base value of 10, if the value is greater than 10 it will float and if this value comes below 10 then it will sink. Hence it works on the same principles of Specific Gravity.
