Hello Aspirant,

I hope you are doing well.

Despite having similar jobs, lab technologists and lab technicians have varied responsibilities and educational requirements. You require a bachelor's degree and a deeper knowledge base than a technician to become a medical technologist.

Medical lab technicians execute standard laboratory operations, instrument/equipment maintenance, sample acquisition, preparation, and analysis. The same tasks can be carried out by medical technologists, along with the more thorough analysis required by doctors.

In research contexts, technologists also make a contribution to novel method development for testing and analysis.

Medical technologists and medical lab technicians differ primarily in that technologists are capable of carrying out more intricate experiments than technicians.

Technicians are not trained to do manual tests, but technologists are.

Technologists may also instruct and supervise lab technicians.

Medical technicians frequently pursue specialisations as well. Among the specialties are:

Blood bank technologists: Also known as immunohematology technologists, these professionals take and analyse blood samples. Moreover, they get blood ready for transfusion.

Technologists that specialise in immunology study the function and reaction of the immune system.

Technologists in clinical chemistry prepare samples and examine the chemical and hormonal makeup of bodily fluids.

Cytotechnologists are lab specialists who examine body tissues for indications of malignancy.

Technologists in the field of microbiology study and analyse bacteria and other microbes.

Once they have accumulated a sufficient amount of expertise, both individuals can choose to specialise in a particular field.
