Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER) was set up in the year 1994 and it is one of the most esteemed veterinary education institution situated in Puducherry/India. However, RIVER is a large campus of 59 acre area which provides 13 courses under 2 degree programmes with total enrolment of 385 students. NAAC has accredited this institute and the college is recognised as an affiliated college. RIVER has a policy standard faculty strength of 34 and the institute always equalises a good student to faculty ratio. This institute follows a balanced sex ratio in the admission ratio with the rural contribute of almost 48 mostly out-state students.
RIVER has many teaching aids, to support and supplement the learning needs of its students. The college has a fully air-conditioned library, with an excess of 5,320 books and 42 national and international journal subscriptions. Student’s practical teaching is done in departmental laboratories general equipped with modern technology. It is participating in the institute’s digital learning support mechanisms through its IT infrastructure. In physical health, there is a multi-gym featuring 8-positions, and different equipment for individual workout. Organised sports facilities are also provided for the students to enable them to have access to organized programmes that enhance student’s healthy lifestyle. It also has a canteen for the students, a guest house and separate hostel for the male and female students who reside within the compound.
The veterinary institute has all the courses in veterinary which totals 13 courses provided at the institute at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The largest programme is the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc and AH) which is a full time programme spread over 6 years and offered to 100 students. At postgraduate level, RIVER has all sorts of M.V.Sc programmes that all take 2 years to complete. These specialised courses include Veterinary Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Animal Husbandry and many others. The combined postgraduate student intake is approximately 31 while at course level the intakes vary between 2 and 3 postgraduate seats.
In RIVER, they have standard procedures in admitting students and it is very much based on the results of the students. For taking admission to undergraduate course, the institute accepts NEET scores as well as CUET UG scores for admission. Candidates for B.V.Sc and AH are admitted from the merit list prepared on the basis of Merit marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology in the qualifying examination. For postgraduate programmes, admission is based on the candidate’s B.V.Sc examination marks - 80% weightage and PG Entrance Examination– 20% weightage. Each candidate must achieve a minimum pass rate of fifty percent (50 percent) in the combined scores for admission to M.V.Sc programs. The institute has scholarships for students, where almost twenty forty percent of students in their undergraduate year get scholarship. The admission procedure is tough to select the brilliant and deserving candidates for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in veterinary sciences. RIVER accepts the scores of two national-level entrance tests: the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate programs (CUET UG) for admissions into undergraduate courses. Generally, admissions for NEET take place from the early months of February to early March, while CUET UG typically takes place in May.
Postgraduate courses are conducted by all institutes through their own PG Entrance Examination. In the M.V.Sc, the candidate's B.V.Sc exam marks together with the PGEE exam determine eligibility for selection to the degree. Completion of 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects is the basic qualifying criterion for admissions into undergraduate programs, while a recognized university B.V.Sc. degree is essential for enrolling in postgraduate programs.

B.V.Sc and AH: The Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry program at RIVER has an intake of 100 students. Admission to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry is done on the performance of the student in either NEET or CUET UG, and application is to be made on the centralized admission committee (CENTAC) portal.
M.V.Sc Programs: RIVER offers a variety of M.V.Sc programs, including but not limited to Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Pathology, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Veterinary Microbiology, and other areas such as Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, and Veterinary Physiology, Livestock Production and Management, and Nutrition of Animals.
Admission to all these M.V.Sc programs is based on a weighted score derived from the examination marks of the B.V.Sc program (80%) and the performance of the PG Entrance Examination (20%). In order to qualify for admission into the M.V.Sc program, students have to score a composite minimum of 50% from the two marks of B.V.Sc and PGEE.
the infrastructure is average in its condition. There's AC classroom for students in 1st year. All the labs have old yet necessary equipment that allows the students to learn in a comprehensive manner. Students interested in any particular sport can readily take part in university level competitions. There's a basket ball court, badminton court, cricket ground, etc. There's no WIFI facility as of now in the hostel.
