MBA vs PGDM WHICH COURSE IS BEST

Yash 27th Sep, 2024

Hi!

Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), both are the two-year management programmes offered by business schools in India. Both programmes teach management skills and are highly recognised by corporates. While MBA is considered to be a degree programme, PGDM on the other hand is a diploma programme. Given below are some of the points of differentiation between MBA and PGDM:

  • Business schools (or private MBA colleges) generally offer PGDM while colleges which are affiliated to the university offer an MBA.
  • Institutes offering PGDM can revise their curriculum in response to changing business needs and industry behaviour while on another hand, colleges offering MBA undergo such revision in a time-based manner.
  • An MBA is offered by a government or private university or a college affiliated with the university which come under the University Grants Commission (UGC). On another hand, PGDM is offered by AICTE recognised business schools and standalone/ autonomous business schools, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD).
  • Colleges offering an MBA generally follows a fixed curriculum which is generally more theoretical in nature while institutions offering PGDM keep on updating their curriculum more frequently.

Candidates who wish to pursue management education must not focus on the nomenclature but should focus on major quality determinants such as faculty, curriculum, rankings, accreditations, and placements.

For detailed information about difference between both the programmes, candidates must read: MBA vs PGDM .

I am not sure if I want to be admitted to MIT-WPU Pune for MBA. One of my friends suggested me to take admission in a good government college. While searching I found IIM Lucknow. what to do? MIT-WPU or IIM Lucknow?

Yash 28th Sep, 2024

Hi!

MIT-WPU and IIM Lucknow are quite different institutions offering the MBA programme. While MIT-WPU is a private university offers an MBA through its WPU School of Business, IIM Lucknow is a public institution established by the Government of India, and is recognised as the 'Institute of National Importance' . Getting admission to the MBA programme of IIM Lucknow is comparatively more difficult than getting admission in MIT-WPU .

However, given below are some of the points of differentiation between MIT-WPU and IIM Lucknow based on which you can make a decision:

  • Exam Accepted : IIM Lucknow accepts the scores of CAT for its flagship MBA programme while MIT-WPU accepts the scores of various entrance examinations such as CAT, XAT , NMAT, GMAT, PERA, CMAT , MAH-CET, and MAT.
  • Selection Process : IIM Lucknow selection process includes appearance in the CAT followed by the Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI) while the selection process of MIT-WPU include appearance in any of the entrance examination followed by Group Discussion (GD)/ Extempore, and Personal Interaction (PI).
  • Specialisations Offered : MIT-WPU offers MBA in 11 different specialisations while IIM Lucknow offers only PGP/ PGP ABM/ PGP SM, and MBA Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
  • Fees : The annual fees charged by MIT-WPU for its MBA programme is Rs. 4,55,000 while the programme fees for the MBA programme charged by IIM Lucknow is approximately Rs. 20,00,000.
  • Placements : The placement opportunities offered at IIM Lucknow is far better than placements at MIT-WPU.

You might consider other factors as well according to your wish. But the conclusion is that IIM Lucknow is better option than MIT-WPU . But you need to score an exceptional percentile in CAT to get admission to the MBA programme offered at IIM Lucknow. On another hand, you might get an Interview call from MIT-WPU even at a lower percentile.

i have 2 year gap after gradution and i dont have any work experience bcz i was preparing for CA Intermediate and now i want to give CAT 2024. will i face difficulty in getting admission in a good MBA college? and tell me about someone story with drop year and getting admission in good mba college.

Ishita 19th Jul, 2024

Hello Aspirant

Seeing as you had a gap of 2 years, it will be very difficult to get into a top MBA college. This is because of two reasons-

(1) Top MBA colleges demand a work experience of a minimum 2-5 years. They rarely accept a fresher into their institutions (IIM A, IIM B, IIM C, etc.) They demand experienced candidates, ones who have worked with good and well-known companies. With zero experience, it'll be difficult to get admission, whether you have a drop year or not.

(2) Since you have a gap of 2 years, it'll be difficult to explain how you used or utilized it in your favor. Colleges, especially MBA colleges need a good enough reason for your drop to admit you into their institution. In their Interview round, they'll continuously ask you questions about that.

I would still suggest you appear for the CAT exam and score really well (6 percentile and above), because if you have a high percentile in the exam and really good academic background, they'll be forced to admit you to their institution.

Hope this helps, All the best!
