Polytechnic is a technical course and it is also known as diploma in engineering.

It helps in getting a technical diploma degree. It is a three year course which makes the students familiar with the technical aspects of technology.

Various branches under which one can do polytechnic are:

  • Computer Science
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Automobile engineering
  • Electronics and communication Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

One can pursue polytechnic in whichever stream they desire.

Job opportunities after polytechnic:

Public Sector

The Government or their allied Public Sector Units offer great career opportunities to Polytechnic Diploma holders. These companies hire Diploma holders for junior level positions (for both engineering and non-engineering candidates) and technician level jobs.

you can get a job at:

  • Railways
  • Indian Army
  • GAIL – Gas Authority of India Limited
  • ONGC – Oil & Natural Gas Corporation
  • DRDO – Defence Research and Development Organization
  • BHEL – Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited
  • NTPC – National Thermal Power Corporation
  • Public Work Departments
  • BSNL – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
  • Irrigation Departments
  • Infrastructure Development Agencies
  • NSSO – National Sample Survey Organization

Similar to the public sector, even private sector companies, especially those dealing in manufacturing, construction and electronics and communication domains hire Polytechnic Diploma holders. However, these jobs are junior level and have very little scope of promotion or expansion.

private sectors hiring polytechnic degree holders

  • Airlines - Indigo, Spicejet, Jet Airways, etc.
  • Construction Firms – Unitech, DLF, Jaypee Associated, GMR Infra, Mitas, etc.
  • Communication Firms – Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, etc.
  • Computer Engineering Firms – TCS, HCL, Wipro, Polaris, etc.

  • Electrical / Power Firms – Tata Power, BSES, Seimens, L&T, etc.
  • Mechanical Engg Firms – Hindustan Unilever, ACC Ltd, Voltas, etc.

One can also go for further  higher education and do B.tech via lateral Entry Scheme.

here are few colleges that offer B.tech through Lateral entry scheme for degree holders.

Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana

DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jalandhar

Government College of Engineering, Pune

Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology, Delhi

Amity School of Engineering and Technology, Noida

Delhi Technological University, Delhi

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala

Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, Delhi

KIITS University, Odisha

Guru Gobind Singh IP University, Delhi

Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar

You can either go for job or continue with further education.

Advantages of Polytechnic:

  • It costs less in pursuing three years polytechnic course than to normal education.
  • If the student is unable to continue his education, then he can get into job and then pursue engineering on a part-time basis without causing financial burden on the family.

Hope this helps.

All the best!
