Nautical Science

Nautical Science is a three years course that results in an undergraduate degree or diploma after which the student joins a ship as a trainee cadet officer or  deck cadet.

After completing sufficient time at the sea (experience/sea time required as a deck cadet varies with the course pursued at the undergraduate level) and clearing required certificate of competency exams, the cadet becomes eligible to be employed as a navigating officer on board a merchant ship.There are several work prospects in this industry, particularly in technological fields. The job descriptions are as follows:

  • Second Officer

  • Chief Officer

  • Captain

  • Oceanographer

  • Nautical Surveyor

In terms of salary,after completing this course, the average pay is INR 25000 – INR 50000 as a deck cadet which goes upto INR 10-15 lakhs per month as a Captain during their sailing period

Marine Engineering

Marine engineering is a field that deals with the engineering aspect of the maritime industry. Like any conventional engineering course, marine engineering is a four-year course which prepares an individual to become an engineer on ship.

  • B.Sc. Nautical Science will prepare you to become a deck officer who has responsibilities like navigation, cargo operations as well as managing the ship. Upon graduating you can start as a Deck Cadet and progress up to Captain.
  • B.Tech. Marine Engineering will if you want to work as an engineer on board in charge of the ship’s engine, upkeep and technical activities. You will start as a Junior Engineer and rise up to Chief Engineer.

If you like navigation, leadership and being at sea, you can pick B.Sc. Nautical Science. If you are mechanical aptitude based, like machines and engineering systems then you can pick B.Tech. Marine Engineering.
