Why was there a huge increase in NIT trichy cutoffs in 2019. For eg. the closing rank for Mech was 14600 in 2019 (home state) but since 2016 it had stayed around 10k. Has it got something to do with the percentile system introduced in 2019? Can we expect a similar cutoff in 2020 as in 2019?

There are 2 types of cut offs namely qualifying cut off and admission cut off. Those Candidates who meet the qualifying cut off are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. The admission cut off is the minimum score required to have higher chances at that particular institute. Now cut offs change every year depending on various factors such as Total no.of seats available. difficulty of the exam, previous years trends, no.of candidates appearing for the exam and no.of Candidates applying for a course. Cut offs decrease when the availability of seats is more than the Candidates applying. But there has been a steady increase of candidates applying for NIT Trichy than the seats available and hence the rise in the cut offs.
