Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Goa Admission Process

The Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Goa (IPHB), started functioning as one of the specialized educational units in pursuit of teaching and practice in the field of mental health.  The institute conducts its own entrance test for admission. The selection is made on a merit basis by the performance of the candidate in this entrance examination held on specific dates as announced by the institute. This facilitates competitive choices and standard evaluation against the limited seats available. As a rule, the admission process goes on within the remainder of that academic year, confirming eligibility for certain dates of the entrance examinations and the submission of application forms on behalf of the institute.

Eligibility criteria for programs at IPHB are designed considering the peculiar nature of each program. They may vary for certain programs, but generally, candidates must possess a degree at the bachelor's level pertaining to the field associated with the course they are applying for. Since mental health education is the main focus of the institute, it may be presumed that candidates with backgrounds in psychology, social work, or nursing might be given preference.

Application Process

The application process for the IPHB programs takes place in sequential steps.

1. Announcement of Admissions: IPHB announces the beginning of the admission process on the official website. A prospective applicant should keep a close eye on the site for any further announcements.

2. Application Form: An application form has to be duly filled by the candidates. While the exact mechanism is not specified, it is likely available on the website of the institute, or candidates can obtain it from the institute directly.

3. Entrance Examination: IPHB conducts its own entrance examination for both programs. The dates for the examination are published on IPHB's website and candidates should follow the given schedule.

4. Merit-Based Selection: Selection is purely based on merit in the Entrance Examination. The Institute prepares a merit list based on the performance in the examination.

5. Verification of Documents: The shortlisted candidates are probably required to submit some necessary documents for verification that could include:

  • Degree certificates and mark sheets of qualifying examinations
  • Proof of date of birth
  • Category certificates (if any)
  • Any other certificates that could be further specified by the institute

6. Final Admission: After document verification has been completed and eligibility has been confirmed, the admission shall be given to these candidates into their respective programs.

7. Making Payments: Selected candidates are required to pay fees for the course to secure admission. Fees for M.Phil. in Psychiatric Social Work is Rs 37,400 per year and Rs 16,400 per year for Diploma in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.

The Degree-wise Admission Process:

M.Phil. in Psychiatric Social Work: This is one full-time postgraduate program offered by the IPHB. Merit in an entrance examination conducted by the institute will be the basis of admission. The duration of the program is usually 2 years, although some students may take up to 3 years to complete it because of the low fee structure. The total fee for this program is Rs 37,400 per year. Social work or social work-related areas will most likely be given preference for the eligibility to this program.

Diploma in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: This could be another specialized course run by the IPHB. Admission for this course is on a performance basis in an entrance examination conducted by the institute, whose fee is Rs 16,400 per annum. This program would fit in perfectly for anybody with a nursing background who is looking to specialize in psychiatric and mental health nursing.
