The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University patiala, also known as MBSPSU, is a newly built state university for sports education and related study in Punjab state, established in 2020. This is a young institution located in Patiala, Punjab, which already has a significant input in the field of sports sciences and physical education. MBSPSU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the college campus covers an area of 93 acres. The university provides a wide variety of 16 courses in 7 different programmes offering focus on various facets of sport, exercise, and physical education. MBSPSU has a faculty composition of six members and expresses the institution’s goal of offering quality education in sports sciences; however, the institution has not disclosed details of the student population and their gender.

The amenities of MBSPSU are comprehensive and provide the necessary facilities to put the spotlight on the anticipation of aspiring sports players. The university has facilities to meet the fitness needs of the students, having a gymnasium and a well-facilitated yoga hall. It offers sixteen full-time programmes comprising bachelors, masters, and postgraduate diplomas. There is no set limit for total students for all courses being offered but for the different courses, the number of seats to be provided fluctuates between 20 and 50. Some of the most famous courses are B.P.E.S. (Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports) for 50 students, B.Sc. Sports Sciences for 30 students, and M.P.E.S. (Master of Physical Education and Sports) for 50 students. The university also follows other postgraduate diploma courses like Postgraduate Diploma in Yoga and Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching for which there are 30 seats each for admission. The university also offers the following specialised 5-year integrated programmes, such as B.Sc. (Sports, and Sport Nutrition), and B.A.

Normally, the university admission process at MBSPSU differs as per the course. In regard to programmes like B.P.E.S, there is a requirement of a Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to qualify. The institution relies on merit to form lists for admissions for students who perform well academically as well as in the sports activities. Courses like the PG Diploma in Yoga make admissions purely by merit list. The university named several entrance exams it considers, but the names of specific exams are not specified.
