For more details.
To get admission in government engineering colleges in any branch (including Civil), you need to qualify JEE (mains). It is a national level entrance exam conducted twice in a year. 1st session is held in the month of January and 2nd session in April. You can appear in JEE(Mains) for 3 consecutive years - if you have passed your Class 12th in 2020, you can apply for it in 2020,2021 and 2022 in all the sessions. So, in total, you get a maximum of 6 attempts (2 attempts in a year). The basic eligibility criteria for the candidates belonging to general category is that they must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in their class 12th board exams or they must rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examination for getting admissions in IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs. These are some of the top institutes. Many among them are fully funded by the government. For IITs, you will also have to qualify the 2nd level of JEE i.e. JEE(Advanced) after clearing JEE(Mains).
Some states also conduct their individual entrance exams to grant admission to the state govt. engineering colleges like KCET (in Karnataka) , WBJEE (in West Bengal) etc.
